Then and now

Then: Bliss was defined by me at age three as new box of Crayons and fresh coloring book. So many colors and so many possibilities for creating kept me absorbed for hours.
Now: Not much has changed. I've traded the Crayons for tubes of transparent watercolor and brushes to bring my art to life. It has been my great fortune to have been raised and continue to live in the rural niches of eastern Washington.
College summers were spent as a Forest Service Fire Lookout which immersed me daily in ever changing light, shadow and seasonal colors. The stories of a backroad landscape and life are my favorite subjects.
My style is representational, but not deeply detailed. You won't get every hair on the dog or leaf on the tree but I hope to convey a feeling of place. I think of my paintings as the beginning of a "scenic" conversation with the viewer. And like any engaging conversation, you'll bring your own experiences or interpretation into the mix.
People often ask how to choose a painting. I tell them to look at a work of art with their heart, as well as their eyes. They should feel a connection or a "spark" when they view it. It should be like a good friend, bringing a smile to their face whenever they see it.
